Smashfinalerecap:LetMeganHiltybeyourstarMay15,2012|11:36amJustbeforethelastepisodeofthefirstseasonof“Smash”aired,showrunnerTheresaRebeckannouncedthatshewouldnotbereturningforSeason2.Instead,JoshSafran,aquot;GossipGirl”producer,iscominginto,inthewordsofTom(neeChristianBorle),“reboot”theentireshow.Thoughthistypeofpersonnelchangeisn’tunheardof,itisrareforamajorshowtoloseitscaptainthisway,andonecanonlyguessthatRebeck,acreatureofthetheater,decidedthatsomeofthemagicthatshewashopingtotranslateontothescreenwasirretrievablylostandthatshewasbetterequippedtoworkonasmallerscalewiththestrongstuff,ratherthanthedilutedversionwritlarge.Orperhapsshejustrealizedthattheshow,asitstandsnow,ismassivelyflawedandthattheenergyitwouldtaketorighttheshipwasn’tsomethingshewaswillingtowasteonKatharineMcPhee’smealy-mouthedlinereadingsanymore.Orperhapsshewasaskedtogracefullyexittomakeroomforahelmerwhounderstandshowtotaketheshow’spotentialanddeliversomethingworthy.Becausethisshowdoeshavepotential!WhenIwatchedthepilotbackinJanuary(doesn’titfeellikeyearsago?),Iknewthatthiswasashowthatwouldliveordieonthescore.MarcShaimanandScottWittmancameoutofthegateblazing,withnumberslike“LetMeBeYourStar”and“TheNationalPasttime”thathaveheldupthroughoutaseasonoflisteningtothem--atleastaswellasanyBroadwaysoundtrackholdsup.AndwiththeexceptionofamiscalculatedRyanTeddernumberandthatbizarreturntoBollywood,theshow’sbestelementhasalwaysbeenitsoriginalmusic.TaketheclosingnumberfromMondaynight,“Don’tForgetMe,”afinalenergeticballadthatledintoa“LetMeBeYourStar”reprise.EventhoughIwasfuriousthatitwasMcPheesingingitandnotMeganHilty--butmoreonthatinabit--thesongmovedme,andIthoughtitwasafittingwaytoendamusicalaboutthelifeofMarilynMonroe.Shepleadsfortheaudiencetorememberhergoodqualities,howhardshestrived,andnothowhardshesuffered.Shewantstobealegend.Atallorder,butasMarilynisthetextbookdefinitionoflegendinourculture,itdoesn’tfeelstretched,andeventhefade-inofalargeprojectionofherfacecomesatjusttherightmoment.It’ssappyandoverstated,sure,butsoismuchofthebestworkonBroadway,andIknowIwouldhaveapplaudedlikemadforthatfinalehadIbeenintheaudience.Sowhatwe’releftwithattheendofthefirstseason--andtheyhaven’tevenmadeittoBroadwayyet,oy--isthattheshowwithinashowworksonsomebasiclevel.Thethingthatdoesn’tworkistheoutershell,theNBCshow,andIthinkRebecksawthewritingonthewallaboutthat.ButbecauseNBCispressingtowardBroadwaywiththisthing,theywillhavetofigureoutawaytomakeitbetter.AndIthinkweallknowthatmeansnotjusthandingoverthereinstoKaren.Here’sthething:Iseewhatthey’redoinghere.Karenisthemoremoldable,malleable,Norma-Jeanableoptionfortherole;sheisthepre-MarilynMarilyn,pronetofitsofshynessanddoubtandoccasionalreveriesofintensetalent.Butshe’salsoboringandstiff,andthosearetwothingsthatNormaJeanneverwas.IunderstandwhyDerekisseeingherstrangeghostwanderaroundthehallslikeaspecterfromhisownpersonalversionof“Scrooge.”HisvisionofMarilynisthatofaninnocent,achild,aballofbeautifulclaythatmenshape.Andwhileitsproblematicthatthedirectorof“Bombshell”hasamisogynisticskewonthewholestory,itdoesfitrightintoDerek’spersona.Helikeshiswomentobelittlegirls,delicateflowers,requiringhisattention.It’sworthnotingthatwhenhewasthesweetesttoIvy,shewasatherlowestpoint,abusingdrugsandgettingkickedoffstages.Hewantstobethebigdaddyintheroom,andKarenisacanvasonwhichhecanpaintthatfantasy,downtoherbackstagemelt-down.Hehastocoaxtheperformanceoutofherasifshe’sababybird,rubbinghercurvesandtellingherthatshe’sastar,thathelovesher.ThereweremanymenthattreatedMarilynthisway,anditpossiblykilledher.Whichistosay,DerekhaschosenKarenfornow,sothathecantreatherandmoldherhoweverhelikes.I’mjustnotsurethatitwon’tkillherinSeason2.Justwaituntilshesleepswithhimandhelosesinterest(andhewill).Itwouldn’tbesuchaproblemthatDerekwentwithKarenasthebigchoiceiftheshowdidn’thavesuchacaptivatingstarletinHilty.McPheedidaserviceablejobonthatlastnumber,butIkeptthinkingthatIvywouldhavebroughtsomethingelsetothesongentirely.Karen’s“Don’tForgetMe”feltlikeapleading,awish.IbetIvy’swouldhavefeltlikeacommand.Theshowissomiscast,inthatHiltyisclearlyaBroadwayperformerwiththechopsforthatkindoftheater,andMcPheeismoreofapopstarwhosomehowkeepsbeatingouttheBroadwayperformer--itdoesn’tmakelogicalsense.WeareallsupposedtosuspendourlogicandgowiththeideathatKaren’stherawtalentwhoissecretlyagenius,butIdon’tknowwhytheykeeppushingthatnarrativewhenclearlyitisn’ttrue.HiltyistherealgeniusintheMarilynrole--evenAnjelicaHustonknowsthat,evenifshecouldn’tswayDerek--andifIwerehere,Iwouldbecontemplatingthefistfulofpillsaswell.TheshowwantsustocareaboutKarenandtodespiseIvy,whosleepswithotherpeople’sboyfriendsandtriestosabotageeverything.Butthebestpersoninreallifeisnotalwaysthebestpersonforthejob,especiallywhenitcomestoshowbusiness.IhopethatnextseasontheyletIvyredeemherselfandtakeherplace.BernadettePetersneedssomethingelsetodobesideslookdevastated.BorletoldtheL.A.TimesthatnextseasonwillfocusmoreonthenutsandboltsaspectsofputtingonaBroadwayshow,andlessonthesoapydrama,towhichIsay(likeSam)hallelujah!MyfavoritelittlebitsofthisepisodewereJuliaandTomtryingtohammeroutorchestrationsandthestagemanagertryingtokeepeveryonehappyduringacrashrun-through.I’dgladlytakemoreofthetechnicalbehind-the-scenessausage,whichthepilotwassogoodatportrayingwithauditionsratherthanplotlinesinvolvingDevorMichaelSwift.Ican’tevengetuptheenergytoworryaboutthefateofKarenandDev.She’sastarnow,soI’massumingthatrelationshipisgoingtofizzleunderherspotlight.AsforMichaelSwift,hemayhaveimpregnatedJules,butthatdoesn’tmakehimlesscreepyorpredatory.AllhehasdoneisthwarttheirChinesebabyplans.TheonlysidecharacterwhoremainscompellingattheendisEllis,whothreatenstoenactrevengeon“Bombshell”whilewearingareddevilsuit.HislittlespeechtoEileenaboutdoingwhatneededtobedone(a.k.a.nearlymurderingamoviestar)andhownear-murderersnevergetcoffeeforanyonewaspreposterous,andhedeservedtobefired.Butpartofmethinksthatin15years,EllisisgoingtobeoneofBroadway’smostsuccessfulproducers.Heisnotafraidtogethishandsdirtywithpeanutshavingsorpossiblyblood,andshowbiztendstorewardinsaneruthlessness.Ihopethesecondseasonexploresthisdarkpatchinsteadofjustmakinghimthevillain.AmbitiondoeshaveitsplaceonBroadway,andI’minterestedtoseewhereEllislandsoncehelearnstoharnesshis.Andthat’sallshewrote,folks.Seeyounextyear,whenwehittheBroadwaystage.WillKarenevendoahipthrustthatdoesn’tmakeherlooklikeafembot?WillIvychannelMarilynevenmorethanshealreadydoeswithanoverdose?WillNickJonasgivebacktheDegas?WillEllisburndownatheaterwhilehestandstherecackling?WillAnjelicaHustoneversingagain?AndhowlongcanJuliahideherbellybeneathherflowyEileenFishergarb?Allwillberevealedsoon.Untilthen,don’tforgetMarilyn,orshewillhauntyou.TheSongs!“MrandMrsSmith”2outof5JazzHands.KarenhasaboutasmuchchemistrywithMichaelSwiftasJuliahaswithherownhusband.Notagreatstarttoherstarturn.“Howl”3outof5JazzHands.IreallylovethissongandthejingoisticUSOchoreography,butIdon’tloveKareninit.Ivystandingbackstageimaginingherownrendition(P.S.“Smash,”pleasestopwithalltheflashbacksinSeason2--it’slikeshakingyourownhand)doesn’thelpKarenany,asshewassoclearlybetter,effortlessandcharmingatit.Karengetsthroughthenumber,butIamnotseeingthisextrasparkthatDerektellsIvyabout.Shelooksmechanicalandscared.“Don’tForgetMe”4.5outof5JazzHands.Andthenshebringsithome,andit’smagical.ThisisoneofTomandJulia’sbestsongsyet.Maybetheyshouldalwayscraminanewendingonthedayoftheshowtokeepthingsfresh.Iwasn’tfeelingKaren’stragicsexualityinhersuicidescene,butherbeggingnottobeforgotteninthisnumbermademeforgethowmuchbetterIvywouldhavebeenandjustfocusonMcPheeintherole.BecausewearestuckwithKarenasMarilyngoingintoSeason2--atleastforalittlewhile--anynumberthatmakeshermorelikableisagoodthing.http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2012/05/smash-finale-recap.html
