Fromthisexpanseofsolitude,agreatsecretissoontoberevealedtothewholeofman.Atthedawnof1945,greatmindstoilsleeplessly.Theirtools--theveryprinciplesoftheuniverse.Theiraim--nothinglessthanalastingpeacefortheworldentire.Itwouldbeahulkingtaskforadeity.Butthesearenotgods.Thesearemortals.Thesearemen.Theyhavehopesanddreams,needsanddesires.Theyhavefearsandmisgivingsforwhatthefuturemayhold.Theyarethemakersofacominghistoryweareallheadedtoward.Historyistoooftennotwhathappened,butwhatwasrecorded.Aliesetdownonpaperwithwetinkbecomesatruthwhendry.Suchisthecaseofthishistory,hereinthequietdesert.Herewefindmenwhoseachievementswillbesnatchedforthegloryofothers,whosesacrificeswillbeforgottenasdetritus.Thecleanesttellingwoulddrawonegreatmaninwhomwecouldfindateachablenarrative,anexemplarofwhat,shouldwegiveitourall,wecouldbecome.Butthosestoriesaremyths.Thisis,asbestIunderstand,thathoneststory.Itisnotsimple,andfewemergeuntarnished.Itisastoryoftheunknowablefutureandallthegnarledturnsthepresenttakesonitsjourneytowardtheworldoftomorrow.
